Why does my cat take a sock to the litterbox?

Q:We have a young female cat. When she uses the litter box, she often brings in an article of clothing in the box with her. Most of the time is it a sock. Why does she do this?

A: I admit it. I’m taking a wild stab at this one. For 15 years, I’ve been answering reader and listener email (relating to my radio shows, www.petworldradio.net). However, this is a first. My guess is that your cat wants to take a little bit of you with her to her box. It’s kind of like a cat’s version of standing your picture on her office desk. She identifies your smell with the clothing.
