VIDEO FRIDAY - Spring cleaning

OK, maybe its not quite Spring yet but with daylight savings upon us this weekend, it certainly is starting to feel like it.

Each year my person Ronnie tries to get me to help him with his Spring cleaning, but, you know, I'm a busy dog. Maybe this year he can get Grace to help him out. Wonder if she does windows...

Austin the latest no-kill city?

Today could be a big day for dogs in Texas.

From the Austin-American Statesman:

Thursday (March 11), City Council is primed to land a one-two punch that should make animal advocates happy: approving $12 million for a new animal center on Levander Loop in East Austin and adopting a 34-point plan to usher Austin into the no-kill future.

Austin will join San Francisco, Charlottesville, Reno, Rancho Cucamonga and other cities in the US with no-kill shelter policies. The no-kill movement has also gained traction overseas. In Italy, killing healthy pets has been illegal since 1991, and in Mumbai dog control has been done on a no-kill basis since 1994 (though it appears that policy may be under threat).

Mushers on drugs

Does this mean the Iditarod is moving into the world of big time sports, or is it just The Man harshing on a certain successful musher?

Oddly, performance enhancing drugs don't seem to be the issue. Defending champ Lance Mackey thinks officials just don't want him smoking any more weed, on or off the trail. From the AP story:

ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Every human competitor now running the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race will be tested for alcohol and illegal drugs on the trail for the first time in the history of the 1,100-mile race — a change defending champion Lance Mackey believes is directed at him.

"I know for a fact," said the three-time winner.

Mackey, who has been open about using medical marijuana on the trail, on Tuesday was among the early front-runners in the race, which began with 71 teams Sunday in Willow.

Lance Mackey was diagnosed with throat cancer in 2001 and uses the marijuana to treat pain related to bone deterioration and loss of his saliva glands.

Dogs, incidentally, have been tested for performance enhancing substances during the race since 1984.

VIDEO FRIDAY - Dinner for one

This one has been lighting up the internet this week, so I thought I would share.

Maybe Joris Beim will do for Labradors what William Wegman did for Weimaraners.

Happy Friday and enjoy!

Forty birds and an electric guitar

There's a neat art installation in London right now that might interest you bird owners (or you guitar players) out there.

French artist Céleste Boursier-Mougenot has created a walkthrough aviary populated by zebra finches and placed a number of musical instruments throughout the installment. As the birds go about their daily activities, they interact with the instruments to create a "random and captivating soundscape."

Makes one wonder, would an infinite number of birds perched on an infinite number of guitars eventually produce the entire catalog of Jimi Hendrix?

You can learn more about the exhibit here.
